À propos de cet additif

Origin

Glyceryl triacetate, also known as triacetin, is a synthetic compound produced by the esterification of glycerol with acetic acid. It is a colorless, viscous, and slightly oily liquid at room temperature. It is miscible with water and many organic solvents. The production process typically involves reacting glycerol with acetic anhydride or acetic acid, often in the presence of a catalyst.

Usage

Triacetin is used in a wide range of applications, primarily in the food industry as a humectant, plasticizer, and solvent. As a humectant, it helps retain moisture in food products, preventing them from drying out. It is used as a plasticizer in chewing gum, contributing to its texture and flexibility. It also serves as a solvent for flavorings and fragrances, ensuring their even distribution in food products. Outside of the food industry, triacetin is used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and industrial applications, such as the production of cellulose acetate filters and as a component in certain adhesives and coatings. It is also used in the production of synthetic glycerol.

Side Effects

Glyceryl triacetate is generally considered safe for use in food and cosmetic products. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of 'not specified,' indicating that, based on available data, the intake of triacetin at levels necessary to achieve the desired technological effect does not pose a health risk. Some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal discomfort if consumed in very large quantities, but this is rare. Regulatory bodies such as the FDA and EFSA have approved its use in various applications, further supporting its safety profile. However, as with any food additive, excessive consumption should be avoided.

Regulatory Status

Glyceryl triacetate is approved for use as a food additive in many countries, including the United States, the European Union, and Canada. In the United States, it is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under 21 CFR 184.1901. In the European Union, it is approved as a food additive with the E number E1518. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated its safety and concluded that it does not pose a significant health risk when used at permitted levels.
