Origin

Castor oil is a vegetable oil obtained by pressing the seeds of the castor bean plant (Ricinus communis). The plant is native to the tropical regions of Africa and Asia, but is now cultivated worldwide. The oil has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and various industrial applications.

Usage

In the food industry, castor oil and its derivatives (such as polyoxyethylene castor oil derivatives) are used as release agents, flavoring components, and in protective coatings. It can be found in hard candies, chewing gum, and vitamin capsules. Its primary function is to prevent sticking and to provide a glossy finish. It is also used in the production of food-grade lubricants. The FDA permits the use of castor oil as a food additive under specific conditions and limitations.

Side Effects

Castor oil is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used in accordance with good manufacturing practices. However, ingestion of large quantities of castor oil can cause gastrointestinal distress, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea. These effects are primarily due to ricinoleic acid, a unique fatty acid that makes up a large percentage of castor oil. Allergic reactions are rare but possible. There is no established ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) for castor oil as a food additive, as its use is limited and self-limiting due to its potential laxative effects.

Regulatory Status

Castor oil is approved for use as a food additive in many countries, including the United States. The FDA regulates its use under 21 CFR 184.1257. In the European Union, castor oil is permitted for use in specific food applications. The specific regulations and permitted uses may vary from country to country.
