About this additive

Origin

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a synthetic polymer. It is produced by the hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate. Unlike many other vinyl polymers, PVA is not made by polymerizing the corresponding monomer, vinyl alcohol, as this monomer is unstable. The synthesis involves first polymerizing vinyl acetate, followed by hydrolysis of the acetate groups to yield PVA.

Usage

Polyvinyl alcohol is used in a variety of applications in the food industry due to its film-forming, emulsifying, and adhesive properties. It is commonly used as a coating agent for tablets and capsules, providing a smooth surface and aiding in swallowing. PVA can also be used as a thickener, stabilizer, and binder in various food products. Its ability to form a barrier against oxygen makes it useful in food packaging applications, helping to extend the shelf life of certain products. It is also used in the production of edible films and coatings for fruits and vegetables, providing a protective layer and improving their appearance.

Side Effects

Polyvinyl alcohol is generally considered safe for use in food applications when used according to good manufacturing practices. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated PVA and concluded that it does not pose a significant health risk at the levels typically used in food. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has not established a numerical Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) but has stated that it is acceptable for use. Some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal discomfort if consumed in large quantities, but this is rare. Allergic reactions to PVA are uncommon.

Regulatory Status

Polyvinyl alcohol is approved for use as a food additive in the European Union (E1203) and the United States. Regulations specify the conditions under which it can be used, including maximum levels in certain food categories. It is also approved for use in food packaging materials in many countries. The FDA includes PVA in its list of substances affirmed as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for specific uses.
