Origin
Lanolin is a natural wax obtained from sheep's wool. It is secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals. Crude lanolin is extracted from shorn wool by washing the wool in hot water with a special soap or detergent to remove dirt, sweat, and other debris. The resulting solution is then processed to isolate the lanolin.Usage
Lanolin is widely used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products due to its emollient, moisturizing, and emulsifying properties. It helps to prevent water loss from the skin, keeping it hydrated and supple. It is commonly found in lotions, creams, lip balms, and ointments. In the food industry, lanolin can be used as a chewing gum base component and as a protective coating for fruits to extend their shelf life. It is also used as a lubricant in some food processing applications.Side Effects
Lanolin is generally considered safe for most people when used topically. However, some individuals may experience allergic reactions, particularly those with wool allergies. Allergic reactions can manifest as skin irritation, redness, itching, or rash. Highly purified lanolin is less likely to cause allergic reactions. There is no established ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) for lanolin, as it is considered to have low toxicity when ingested in small amounts.Regulatory Status
Lanolin is approved for use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals in many countries, including the United States and the European Union. In the United States, it is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use in food-contact applications under certain conditions. In the European Union, it is permitted as a food additive under specific regulations. The specific regulations and permitted uses may vary depending on the country and application.Quellen
