Origin

Spermaceti is a waxy substance found in the head cavities of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). It is primarily composed of cetyl palmitate and other wax esters. Historically, it was obtained by cooling the oil from the whale's head and separating the solidified wax.

Usage

Spermaceti has been used in various applications, including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and candles. In cosmetics, it acts as an emollient, providing a smooth and moisturizing effect. In pharmaceuticals, it has been used as an ingredient in ointments and creams. Its use in candles is due to its ability to burn brightly and cleanly. However, due to ethical concerns and regulations regarding whaling, its use has significantly declined and has been replaced by synthetic alternatives.

Side Effects

While spermaceti was considered relatively safe for topical applications, the primary concern surrounding its use is ethical and environmental, related to whaling. Direct side effects from topical application are rare, but as with any substance, allergic reactions are possible. Ingestion is not recommended. Due to the decline in use, comprehensive modern safety studies are limited.
