Origin

Beeswax is a natural wax produced by honeybees of the genus *Apis*. The wax is secreted from wax-producing glands on the worker bees' abdomens. Bees use beeswax to construct honeycombs, the structures where they store honey and pollen and raise their young. The raw beeswax is typically yellow, but it can be bleached to produce white beeswax.

Usage

Beeswax has a wide range of applications in the food industry. It is primarily used as a glazing agent, providing a protective coating and a glossy appearance to various products. Common applications include coating candies, chocolates, and fruits. It is also used as a component in chewing gum bases and as a release agent in baking. Additionally, beeswax can be found in some natural food wraps as an alternative to plastic wrap. In cosmetics, beeswax is used as an emulsifier, thickener, and emollient in products like lip balms, lotions, and creams. Its water-repellent properties make it useful in protective creams and ointments. In pharmaceuticals, beeswax is used as a binding agent and coating for tablets and capsules.

Side Effects

Beeswax is generally considered safe for consumption and topical use. It is poorly absorbed by the body and is largely excreted unchanged. Allergic reactions to beeswax are rare but possible, especially in individuals with known allergies to bee products or pollen. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include skin irritation, itching, or, in rare cases, anaphylaxis. There is no established Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for beeswax, as it is considered to be of low toxicity. However, excessive consumption may lead to mild gastrointestinal discomfort in some individuals.

Regulatory Status

Beeswax is approved for use as a food additive in many countries, including the United States, the European Union, and Canada. In the EU, it is designated as E901. The FDA considers beeswax to be Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) when used in accordance with good manufacturing practices. Regulations specify the purity criteria for beeswax used in food applications, ensuring that it meets certain standards for quality and safety.
