Origin

Benzoin resin is a balsamic resin obtained from the bark of several species of trees in the genus *Styrax*. The primary species used are *Styrax benzoin*, *Styrax tonkinensis*, *Styrax paralleloneurus*, and *Styrax macrocarpus*. These trees are native to Southeast Asia, including regions like Sumatra, Java, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. The resin is harvested by making incisions in the tree bark, allowing the resin to exude and harden. There are two main types of benzoin resin: Sumatra benzoin (from *Styrax benzoin*) and Siam benzoin (from *Styrax tonkinensis*).

Usage

In the food industry, benzoin resin is used as a flavoring agent and as a component of chewing gum base. It imparts a sweet, vanilla-like aroma and flavor. It's also used in some alcoholic beverages. Beyond food, benzoin resin is widely used in fragrances, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. It acts as a fixative in perfumes, helping to prolong the scent. In traditional medicine, it has been used for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Side Effects

Benzoin resin is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by regulatory bodies when used in small amounts as a food additive. However, some individuals may experience allergic reactions, particularly skin irritation or contact dermatitis, if exposed to benzoin resin. Inhalation of benzoin resin fumes can also cause respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals. There is no established Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for benzoin resin as its use in food is limited and exposure is considered low. High doses are not typical in food applications, and the focus is on minimizing potential allergic reactions in susceptible individuals.
