E151 - Brilliant black bn

Origin

Brilliant Black BN, also known as Black PN, is a synthetic diazo dye. It is produced by the diazotization of 4-amino-5-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulfophenyl)azo]naphthalene-2,7-disulfonic acid, followed by coupling with 7-amino-1,3-naphthalenedisulfonic acid. It appears as a black powder or granules.

Usage

E151 is used as a food coloring agent to impart a black or dark color to various food products. It is commonly found in confectionery, desserts, sauces, and certain beverages. It is also used in non-food applications such as cosmetics and textile dyeing. The color is stable under most food processing conditions, including heat and light. However, it can fade in the presence of strong reducing agents. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has re-evaluated the safety of Brilliant Black BN as a food additive.

Side Effects

While Brilliant Black BN is generally considered safe for consumption within the established Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI), some individuals may experience adverse reactions. There have been reports of allergic reactions, including skin rashes and asthma, in sensitive individuals. The ADI established by EFSA is 1-5 mg/kg body weight per day. Some studies have suggested a possible link between artificial food colors, including Brilliant Black BN, and hyperactivity in children, although the evidence is not conclusive. Regulatory bodies like EFSA and the FDA continuously monitor and re-evaluate the safety of food additives based on the latest scientific evidence.

Regulatory Status

Brilliant Black BN is approved for use as a food additive in the European Union (EU) and many other countries. It is subject to regulatory limits on its concentration in food products. In the EU, it is regulated under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has also evaluated the safety of Brilliant Black BN.
