Origin

Propyl para-hydroxybenzoate, also known as propylparaben, is a synthetic preservative belonging to the paraben family. Parabens are esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid. Propylparaben is produced through the esterification of para-hydroxybenzoic acid with propanol. It is a white, odorless or almost odorless crystalline powder.

Usage

Propylparaben is primarily used as an antimicrobial preservative in a wide range of products, including food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. In food, it inhibits the growth of molds, yeasts, and bacteria, thereby extending the shelf life of products. It is often used in combination with other preservatives, such as methylparaben (E218), to provide a broader spectrum of antimicrobial activity. Typical applications in food include baked goods, processed fruits and vegetables, and beverages. In cosmetics, it is used in lotions, creams, shampoos, and other personal care products to prevent microbial contamination. In pharmaceuticals, it can be found in topical medications and some oral formulations.

Side Effects

While generally considered safe at permitted levels, propylparaben has been associated with some potential side effects. Some individuals may experience allergic reactions, such as skin irritation, contact dermatitis, or urticaria. There have been concerns raised regarding the potential endocrine-disrupting effects of parabens, including propylparaben. Some studies suggest that parabens may mimic estrogen, potentially interfering with hormone function. However, regulatory agencies like EFSA and FDA have evaluated the available scientific evidence and concluded that propylparaben is safe for use in food and cosmetics at the established concentrations. The Scientific Committee on Food established a group ADI of 0-10 mg/kg bw/day for parabens (methyl-, ethyl-, propyl- and butylparabens).

Regulatory Status

Propylparaben is approved for use as a food additive in many countries, including the European Union (EU) and the United States. In the EU, it is designated as E216. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated the safety of propylparaben and established acceptable daily intake (ADI) levels. The use of propylparaben is regulated to ensure that consumer exposure remains within safe limits. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also regulates the use of propylparaben in food and cosmetics. The permitted levels vary depending on the specific application and regulatory jurisdiction.
