À propos de cet additif

Origin

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), also commonly called povidone, is a synthetic polymer made from the monomer N-vinylpyrrolidone. It is produced through a process of polymerization, where many N-vinylpyrrolidone molecules are linked together to form a large polymer chain. The synthesis typically involves the use of a free-radical initiator.

Usage

PVP is used in a wide range of applications due to its excellent solubility in water and many organic solvents, its non-toxicity, and its ability to form complexes with various substances. In the food industry, it is used as a clarifying agent for beverages (such as wine and beer), as a stabilizer, and as a binder in tablets. It can also be found in vitamin pills and dietary supplements. PVP is also used in pharmaceuticals as a binder in tablets, a film-forming agent, and a solubilizer for poorly soluble drugs. Industrially, it is used in adhesives, detergents, cosmetics (hair sprays, gels), and as a protective colloid in various suspensions.

Side Effects

PVP is generally considered safe for use in food and pharmaceutical applications when used according to good manufacturing practices. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has evaluated PVP and established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of "not specified," meaning that, based on available data, the intake of PVP at the levels necessary to achieve the desired technological effect in food does not represent a health concern. However, some individuals may experience allergic reactions to PVP, although such reactions are rare. Inhalation of PVP powder can cause respiratory irritation. Large doses are known to have a laxative effect. There have been reports of PVP accumulation in the body following intravenous administration, leading to adverse effects, but this is not relevant to its use as a food additive.

Regulatory Status

PVP is approved for use as a food additive in many countries, including the United States, the European Union, and Canada. In the EU, it is designated as E1201. Regulations specify the conditions under which it can be used, including maximum levels in certain food products. The FDA in the United States recognizes PVP as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for specific uses under certain conditions.
