Origin

Beta-cyclodextrin (β-cyclodextrin) is a cyclic oligosaccharide composed of seven glucose units linked by α-1,4-glycosidic bonds. It is produced by enzymatic degradation of starch, typically using cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase). The enzyme is produced by various Bacillus species. The resulting mixture of cyclodextrins (alpha, beta, and gamma) is then separated, and beta-cyclodextrin is purified.

Usage

Beta-cyclodextrin is used in the food industry as an encapsulating agent, flavor stabilizer, and to improve the solubility and bioavailability of various compounds. It forms inclusion complexes with hydrophobic molecules, protecting them from degradation and masking undesirable flavors or odors. It can be found in a variety of food products, including processed foods, beverages, and dietary supplements. It is also used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics for similar purposes.

Side Effects

Beta-cyclodextrin is generally considered safe for human consumption at the levels typically used in food. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of up to 5 mg/kg body weight. High doses may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, such as bloating, diarrhea, and nausea, due to its osmotic effect in the intestine. However, these effects are rare at normal consumption levels. Studies have shown that beta-cyclodextrin is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with most of it being excreted in the feces.

Regulatory Status

Beta-cyclodextrin is approved for use as a food additive in many countries, including the United States, the European Union, and Japan. In the EU, it is designated as E459. The FDA has granted it GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status for specific uses. Regulations specify the maximum levels allowed in different food categories to ensure safety.
