Origin

Dehydroacetic acid (DHA) is a synthetic organic compound. It is not naturally occurring and is produced through chemical synthesis, typically involving the base-catalyzed cyclization of diketene. The resulting compound is a white to off-white crystalline powder.

Usage

Dehydroacetic acid and its sodium salt (sodium dehydroacetate) are primarily used as preservatives, particularly as fungicides and bactericides. They are employed to inhibit the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds in various applications. Its main use is as an antimicrobial preservative in cosmetics and personal care products, extending their shelf life by preventing microbial spoilage. It has also been used to a limited extent in the past as a preservative for certain food products, although its use in food is now less common due to regulatory restrictions and the availability of alternative preservatives. It is effective against a broad spectrum of microorganisms at relatively low concentrations. It is also used in some plastics and coatings as a stabilizer.

Side Effects

While dehydroacetic acid is considered relatively safe at permitted concentrations, some potential side effects have been reported. These can include skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, particularly when used in cosmetic products. Studies have shown that high doses can cause neurological symptoms in animal models. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of 0-0.5 mg/kg body weight. Regulatory bodies carefully monitor its usage to ensure that exposure levels remain within safe limits. It is important to note that the use of dehydroacetic acid in food is restricted in many countries due to concerns about potential toxicity at higher concentrations.
