Origin

Calcium silicate is a synthetic amorphous calcium salt of silicic acid. It is produced by reacting calcium oxide and silicon dioxide under controlled conditions. The resulting compound is a fine, white or off-white powder.

Usage

Calcium silicate is primarily used as an anti-caking agent in food products. It absorbs moisture and prevents clumping, ensuring free-flowing powders and granules. It is commonly found in table salt, spices, baking powder, and powdered food products. It also functions as a carrier for flavorings and colors. The typical usage levels are relatively low, usually less than 2% of the food product. In addition to food, calcium silicate is used in various industrial applications, including insulation materials, ceramics, and cement.

Side Effects

Calcium silicate is generally considered safe for consumption at the levels typically used in food. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) "not specified", meaning that, based on available data, the intake of calcium silicate at levels necessary to achieve the desired technological effect in food does not represent a health concern. However, excessive consumption of any mineral salt can potentially lead to gastrointestinal discomfort or mineral imbalances. No significant adverse effects have been reported in human studies at typical dietary exposure levels. Some studies suggest that high doses may interfere with the absorption of other minerals, but this is unlikely at the levels found in food. Individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions should exercise caution, as with any calcium-containing compound.
