About this additive

Origin

Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) is a complex mixture of triacylglycerols that have been reacted with bromine. It is derived from vegetable oils such as soybean or corn oil. The bromination process increases the density of the oil.

Usage

BVO is primarily used as an emulsifier, specifically to stabilize citrus-flavored beverages. It helps prevent the separation of the citrus oil from the water-based components, providing a consistent and appealing appearance. Historically, it was widely used in soft drinks like Mountain Dew and other citrus-flavored sodas. However, due to health concerns, its use has significantly declined and is now banned or restricted in many countries. The typical concentration used in beverages was relatively low, usually around 15 ppm.

Side Effects

The primary concern with BVO is the accumulation of bromine in the body. Excessive bromine intake can lead to bromism, a condition characterized by neurological symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, ataxia, and psychosis. Long-term exposure can also affect the thyroid gland, potentially leading to hypothyroidism. Due to these potential health risks, regulatory agencies have re-evaluated and, in many cases, banned the use of BVO in food and beverages.

Regulatory Status

The regulatory status of BVO varies significantly across different countries. It is banned in the European Union, Japan, and several other nations due to health concerns. In the United States, the FDA initially permitted its use but has proposed to revoke this authorization. The Codex Alimentarius Commission has not established an ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) for BVO, reflecting the lack of safety data and concerns about its potential toxicity.
