About this additive
Origin
Sucrose acetate isobutyrate (SAIB) is a synthetic food additive derived from sucrose (table sugar). It is produced by esterifying sucrose with acetic and isobutyric anhydrides. This process results in a complex mixture of sucrose esters.Usage
SAIB is primarily used as a weighting agent in beverages, especially in citrus-flavored drinks. It increases the density of the oil phase in flavored beverages, preventing the separation of flavor oils and ensuring a stable, homogenous mixture. This prevents a ring of flavor oil forming at the top of the beverage. It is also used in some cosmetics and personal care products as a plasticizer and film former. The typical usage levels in beverages range from 10 to 300 ppm. SAIB is also used in printing inks and coatings.Side Effects
SAIB is generally considered safe for use in food and beverages at permitted levels. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of up to 20 mg/kg body weight. Studies have shown that high doses of SAIB can cause liver enlargement in animals, but these effects have not been observed at levels relevant to human consumption. Some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal discomfort, but this is rare. Regulatory bodies like the EFSA and FDA have reviewed the safety data and have approved its use under specific conditions.Regulatory Status
SAIB is approved for use as a food additive in the United States, the European Union, and other countries. In the EU, it is designated as E444. The FDA permits its use as a weighting agent for flavoring oils in beverages under specific conditions outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).Sources
