Origin

Tartrazine is a synthetic lemon yellow azo dye primarily used as a food coloring. It is derived from coal tar, although modern manufacturing processes often use petroleum as a starting material. It was first synthesized in the late 19th century and has been widely used in the food industry since then.

Usage

Tartrazine is used to impart a yellow color to a wide variety of food products, beverages, and cosmetics. Common applications include: soft drinks, energy drinks, flavored chips, cereals, baked goods (cakes, pastries), sweets, ice cream, jams, processed vegetables, canned goods, and even some pharmaceuticals. It is also used in some art and craft materials. The color it provides is a bright, intense yellow. It is often combined with other food colorings to achieve a broader range of colors, such as green when mixed with blue dyes.

Side Effects

Tartrazine is one of the most controversial food colorings due to its potential to cause allergic reactions and other adverse effects in sensitive individuals. Some people experience symptoms such as hives, itching, angioedema (swelling), and asthma after consuming tartrazine. It has been linked to hyperactivity in children, although the evidence is not conclusive. Regulatory bodies such as the EFSA and FDA have evaluated the safety of tartrazine and established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of up to 7.5 mg/kg body weight per day. However, some countries require products containing tartrazine to be labeled with a warning about its potential to cause allergic reactions, particularly in people sensitive to aspirin.

Regulatory Status

Tartrazine is approved for use as a food additive in many countries, including the United States, the European Union, Canada, and Australia. However, regulations regarding its use and labeling vary. In the EU, food products containing tartrazine must be labeled with the warning "may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children." The FDA requires tartrazine to be listed on the ingredient label of food products. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has also evaluated the safety of tartrazine and established an ADI.
