Origin

Sunset Yellow FCF (E110) is a synthetic azo dye derived from petroleum. It is primarily a disodium salt of 2-hydroxy-1-(4-sulfonatophenylazo)naphthalene-6-sulfonic acid. It appears as an orange-yellow powder or granules.

Usage

Sunset Yellow FCF is widely used as a food coloring agent to impart a yellow-orange hue. It is commonly found in a variety of food products, including processed foods, snacks, confectionery, beverages, and baked goods. Specific applications include cheese sauces, ice cream, sweets, canned fruits, and soft drinks. Beyond food, it is also used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The acceptable daily intake (ADI) established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is 0-4 mg/kg body weight per day.

Side Effects

While generally considered safe within the established ADI, Sunset Yellow FCF has been linked to some adverse effects in sensitive individuals. Some studies suggest a possible association with hyperactivity in children when consumed in combination with other artificial food colorings and preservatives. Allergic reactions, although rare, can occur, manifesting as skin rashes, itching, or respiratory symptoms.
