Origin

Sodium dehydroacetate is a synthetic organic sodium salt derived from dehydroacetic acid. Dehydroacetic acid is produced by the base-catalyzed cyclization of diketene. It is primarily used as a preservative and fungicide.

Usage

Sodium dehydroacetate is used as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care products, as well as in some food applications. It inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi, extending the shelf life of products. In cosmetics, it can be found in products such as shampoos, lotions, and creams. In food, its usage is more limited due to regulatory restrictions and the availability of other preservatives. The typical concentration used in cosmetic formulations ranges from 0.1% to 0.3%.

Side Effects

Sodium dehydroacetate is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products at permitted concentrations. However, some individuals may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions. Studies have shown that it has low toxicity when ingested. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has assessed the safety of dehydroacetic acid and its salts, concluding that they are safe for use in cosmetics when formulated to avoid irritation. There is limited data on long-term exposure effects. No ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) has been established by JECFA (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives) for sodium dehydroacetate.
