Origin

Allura Red AC is a synthetic azo dye. It is derived from petroleum and is not found naturally. It is produced by diazotization of 5-amino-4-methoxy-2-sulfonic acid followed by coupling with 2-naphthol-6-sulfonic acid. It appears as a red powder or granules.

Usage

Allura Red AC is used as a food coloring agent to impart a red or orange-red color to various food products. It is widely used in confectionery, beverages, dairy products, cereals, snacks, and sauces. It is also used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The dye is water-soluble and stable under most food processing conditions. It is often used in combination with other food colorings to achieve desired shades.

Side Effects

Allura Red AC has been subject to extensive safety evaluations by regulatory bodies worldwide. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of 0-7 mg/kg body weight. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has also re-evaluated Allura Red AC and established a similar ADI. Some studies have suggested a possible link between Allura Red AC and hyperactivity in children, particularly in combination with other artificial food colors and preservatives. However, the evidence is not conclusive, and further research is ongoing. Regulatory bodies generally consider Allura Red AC safe for use in food when consumed within the established ADI.
