Origin

Riboflavin, also known as Vitamin B2, is a water-soluble vitamin naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. It is a yellow-orange solid substance. Riboflavin is produced industrially through microbial fermentation, often using genetically modified organisms. It can also be synthesized chemically, but fermentation is the more common and cost-effective method.

Usage

Riboflavin is essential for various bodily processes, including energy production, cellular function, growth, and metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. It acts as a precursor to the coenzymes flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), which are crucial for numerous enzymatic reactions. In the food industry, riboflavin is used as a color additive (yellow-orange) and as a nutrient supplement. It's added to cereals, bread, pasta, sauces, dairy products, and infant formulas to enhance their nutritional value and color. It is also used in animal feed.

Side Effects

Riboflavin is generally considered safe for consumption. It is water-soluble, meaning that excess amounts are typically excreted in the urine rather than stored in the body. No Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) has been established for riboflavin because high doses have not been associated with adverse effects. However, very high doses may cause urine to become bright yellow. There are no known significant drug interactions with riboflavin. The Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) is not specified, as it is considered a nutrient rather than a potentially harmful additive at normal levels.

Regulatory Status

Riboflavin (E101) is approved for use as a food additive in the European Union (EU). It is also approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). The FDA permits riboflavin as a color additive and nutrient supplement. Regulations specify the types of foods in which it can be used and the maximum permitted levels. Similar approvals exist in many other countries worldwide.
