E419 - Ghatti-Gummi

Origin

Gum ghatti is a complex polysaccharide exudate obtained from the tree Anogeissus latifolia, which is native to India, Sri Lanka, and other parts of Southeast Asia. The gum is harvested from the tree after incisions are made in the bark, allowing the sap to seep out and harden. It is then collected, processed, and purified for use as a food additive.

Usage

Gum ghatti is primarily used as a stabilizer, emulsifier, and thickener in the food industry. It is found in a variety of products, including confectionery, beverages, sauces, and processed foods. Its ability to form stable emulsions and increase viscosity makes it valuable in applications where maintaining texture and preventing separation are important. Gum ghatti is also used in non-food applications such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and printing.

Side Effects

Gum ghatti is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by regulatory agencies when used in accordance with good manufacturing practices. Studies have shown that it is poorly absorbed in the digestive tract, with most of it being excreted in the feces. While allergic reactions are rare, individuals with sensitivities to other gums or plant-based substances may experience mild gastrointestinal discomfort. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of "not specified", indicating that it poses no health hazard at levels necessary to achieve the desired technological effect.

Regulatory Status

Gum ghatti is approved for use as a food additive in many countries, including the United States, the European Union, and Canada. Regulatory bodies such as the FDA and EFSA have evaluated its safety and established guidelines for its use in food products. It is listed under E419 in the European Union. The FDA includes it in 21 CFR 184.1333 as a substance generally recognized as safe for direct addition to food.
