Origin

Magnesium carbonates (E504) are inorganic salts of magnesium. They occur naturally as the minerals magnesite (MgCO3) and hydromagnesite (Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O). Commercially, they are produced by reacting magnesium salts with carbonate salts, often involving the precipitation of magnesium carbonate from a solution. Different forms exist, including magnesium carbonate (MgCO3), magnesium bicarbonate (Mg(HCO3)2), and hydrated forms.

Usage

Magnesium carbonates are used in the food industry as anticaking agents, acidity regulators, and color retention agents. They can prevent powders from clumping together, maintain a desired pH level in food products, and stabilize the color of certain foods. They are also used as a source of magnesium in dietary supplements and fortified foods. In non-food applications, they are used in the production of magnesium oxide, rubber, plastics, and cosmetics.

Side Effects

Magnesium carbonates are generally considered safe for consumption at levels typically used in food. Magnesium is an essential mineral, and small amounts are necessary for various bodily functions. However, excessive intake of magnesium can lead to adverse effects, such as diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and nausea. In individuals with impaired kidney function, high magnesium intake can result in hypermagnesemia, a condition characterized by elevated magnesium levels in the blood, which can cause serious health problems. The EFSA has not established a numerical ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) for magnesium carbonates, but its use is regulated based on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

Regulatory Status

Magnesium carbonates (E504) are approved for use as a food additive in the European Union (EU) and are listed in Annex II of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. They are also permitted for use in food in the United States, where they are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) under specific conditions of use. The specific regulations and permitted levels vary depending on the food category.
