Origin

Dimethyl polysiloxane, also known as dimethicone, is a synthetic silicone polymer. It is derived from silica (silicon dioxide), which is found abundantly in sand and quartz. The manufacturing process involves reacting chlorosilanes with water and methanol, followed by polymerization to create the desired polymer chains. Different grades and viscosities are produced by varying the chain length and cross-linking.

Usage

Dimethyl polysiloxane is widely used as an anti-foaming agent in food production. It prevents or reduces the formation of foam during processing, which can improve efficiency and product quality. It is commonly found in cooking oils, fried foods, jams, jellies, soups, and processed vegetables. The additive is also used in non-food applications such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and industrial products. In food, it's typically used in very small quantities. It is also used as a release agent, lubricant, and protective coating.

Side Effects

Dimethyl polysiloxane is generally considered safe for human consumption at the levels typically used in food. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of "not specified," meaning that, based on available data, the intake of the substance at the levels necessary to achieve the desired technological effect does not represent a hazard to health. Some individuals may experience rare allergic reactions or sensitivities, but these are uncommon. Extensive toxicological studies have shown no evidence of carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, or reproductive toxicity. However, as with any food additive, excessive consumption should be avoided.
