Origin

Mineral oil, medium and low viscosity (Class II), is derived from petroleum through a refining process. It is a complex mixture of saturated hydrocarbons, primarily alkanes and cycloalkanes. The 'medium and low viscosity' designation refers to its flow characteristics, making it suitable for applications where a certain level of lubrication or coating is required without being excessively thick.

Usage

E905f is permitted for use as a release agent, lubricant, or protective coating in various food applications. Specifically, it is used on confectionery, baked goods, and as a pan release agent. It prevents sticking and imparts a glossy appearance. The acceptable daily intake (ADI) is established and regulated by authorities like EFSA and FDA to ensure safe consumption levels. Usage levels are carefully controlled to minimize potential migration into the food product. It is also used in animal feed as a dust suppressant.

Side Effects

While mineral oil is generally considered safe when used within established limits, excessive consumption can lead to adverse effects. High doses may interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K). Some individuals may experience gastrointestinal discomfort, such as diarrhea, if large quantities are ingested. Regulatory bodies continuously monitor and reassess the safety of mineral oil based on the latest scientific evidence. The purity and refining process are critical factors in determining its safety profile; highly refined mineral oils are preferred to minimize the presence of potentially harmful aromatic hydrocarbons.
