Origin

Brown FK is a synthetic coal tar diazo dye. It is a mixture consisting primarily of diazonium salts and disodium 4,4'-diazoamino-dibenzenesulfonate. It is manufactured by coupling diazotized aniline with resorcinol, followed by sulfonation.

Usage

Brown FK is used as a food coloring, primarily in kippers (smoked herring), and occasionally in other processed foods. Its use is limited due to concerns about potential toxicity. It imparts a brown color to the food product. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of 0-0.15 mg/kg body weight.

Side Effects

Brown FK has been associated with potential allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Some studies have suggested possible links to hyperactivity in children, although the evidence is not conclusive. Due to the presence of diazonium salts, there are concerns regarding potential genotoxicity, which has led to restrictions on its use in several countries. Some animal studies have indicated potential adverse effects on the liver and kidneys at high doses.

Regulatory Status

Brown FK is permitted for use in certain food products in some countries, but it is banned or restricted in others, including the United States and Australia. In the European Union, its use is permitted only in kippers. The regulatory status reflects concerns about its safety profile and potential health risks.
