À propos de cet additif

Origin

Formaldehyde is a naturally occurring organic compound with the formula CH₂O. It is the simplest aldehyde. It can be produced synthetically from methanol through oxidation processes. Historically, it has been used in various industrial applications, including the production of resins, adhesives, and disinfectants.

Usage

As a food additive (E240), formaldehyde was historically used as a preservative due to its antimicrobial properties. It could inhibit the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, thereby extending the shelf life of certain food products. However, its use as a food preservative is now largely discontinued due to safety concerns.

Side Effects

Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen. Exposure to formaldehyde, even at low levels, can cause irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. Higher levels of exposure can lead to more severe health effects, including respiratory problems and cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified formaldehyde as carcinogenic to humans based on sufficient evidence of nasopharyngeal cancer. Due to these significant health risks, its use in food is highly restricted or banned in many countries. There is no established Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) because any intake poses a potential risk.

Regulatory Status

The use of formaldehyde as a food additive (E240) is either banned or severely restricted in most countries, including the European Union, the United States, and Canada. Regulations prohibit its direct addition to food products due to its toxicity. Any presence of formaldehyde in food is typically due to environmental contamination or its natural occurrence in certain foods at very low levels.
