À propos de cet additif

Origin

Carnauba wax is a wax obtained from the leaves of the carnauba palm (Copernicia prunifera), a plant native to and growing only in the northeastern Brazilian states of Piauí, Ceará, and Rio Grande do Norte. It is known as "queen of waxes" and in its pure state, it usually comes in the form of hard yellow-brown flakes. It is obtained by collecting and drying the leaves, then beating them to loosen the wax. The wax is then refined and bleached.

Usage

Carnauba wax is used in a wide variety of applications. In the food industry, it is used as a glazing agent for confectionery, such as chocolate-coated sweets, chewing gum, and fruit. It provides a glossy appearance and helps to prevent moisture loss. It is also used as a release agent in the production of certain food products. Beyond food, it is used in car waxes, shoe polishes, cosmetics (lipsticks, mascaras), and dental floss. Due to its hypoallergenic properties and shine, carnauba wax is also used in many skin care products.

Side Effects

Carnauba wax is generally considered safe for consumption. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated carnauba wax and concluded that it does not pose a health risk at the levels currently used in food. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also recognizes carnauba wax as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use in food. No ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) has been specified, indicating a high margin of safety. However, as with any substance, some individuals may experience allergic reactions, although these are rare. Excessive consumption is unlikely due to its limited use levels in food products.

Regulatory Status

Carnauba wax is approved for use as a food additive in the European Union (E903) and the United States. It is also permitted in many other countries worldwide. Regulations typically specify the maximum levels of carnauba wax that can be used in different food categories.
