About this additive

Origin

Lutein is a naturally occurring carotenoid found in a variety of plants, particularly dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and marigolds. Commercially, lutein is often extracted from marigold flowers (Tagetes erecta) due to their high concentration of this pigment. It can also be produced synthetically, although extraction from natural sources is more common for food applications.

Usage

Lutein is primarily used as a food coloring agent, providing a yellow to orange hue. It is added to various food products, including baked goods, pasta, margarine, and salad dressings. Beyond its coloring properties, lutein is also valued for its antioxidant properties and potential health benefits, particularly for eye health. It is often included in dietary supplements aimed at supporting vision and reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) established by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) is 0-1 mg/kg body weight.

Side Effects

Lutein is generally considered safe for consumption at levels typically used in food. Extensive research has not revealed significant adverse effects associated with lutein intake from food sources or supplements within recommended dosages. However, as with any food additive, some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal discomfort or allergic reactions, although these are rare. High doses from supplements may theoretically lead to carotenodermia (yellowing of the skin), but this is harmless and reversible upon reducing intake.

Regulatory Status

Lutein (E161b) is approved for use as a food additive in many countries, including the European Union and the United States. In the EU, it is subject to specific purity criteria and usage levels outlined in Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. In the United States, lutein is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) when used in accordance with good manufacturing practices. The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has re-evaluated the safety of lutein and concluded that its use as a food additive is safe under the specified conditions of use.
